Once upon a time, there lived an old woodcutter in a small village. Every day, he would go to the forest to chop down dead trees. His son would help by carrying the chopped wood to the nearby market and selling it. This was how they earned their living.
One day, the old woodcutter fell ill and could no longer go to the forest. For a few days, his son sold the wood they had already chopped. But soon, the wood ran out. With no other choice, the son decided to go to the forest and chop trees himself.
On his first day in the forest, the young man worked hard. He chopped many trees and felt proud of himself. The next day, he took the wood to the market and sold it for a good price. Feeling confident, he decided that as long as his father was unwell, he would follow this routine: chop trees one day, sell them the next.
At first, everything went well. But as the days went by, the son noticed something strange. Each day, he was chopping fewer and fewer trees. No matter how hard he tried, the number of trees he cut kept decreasing. This meant less wood to sell, less money, and less food.
Seeing this, the son decided to work even harder. He spent more hours in the forest, chopping with all his strength. People in the village admired his dedication and praised him for his hard work. But no matter how much effort he put in, he couldn't match the number of trees he had cut on the first day. Day after day, his frustration grew.
The young man lived by the motto, "Don't waste time, work hard." So, he thought the problem was that he wasn't working hard enough. He decided to push himself even more.
The old woodcutter, though still ill, had been watching his son from a distance. One day, he called his son over and said, "Son, I see how hard you've been working, and I admire your effort. But tell me, have you thought about why you're not getting the same results as before?"
Frustrated, the son replied, "Isn't it obvious, Father? I’m not working hard enough. I just need to put in more effort!"
The old woodcutter smiled and asked, "When was the last time you sharpened your axe? How much effort have you put into that?"
The son’s eyes widened as realization hit him. "I… I haven’t sharpened it since I started," he admitted. "I’ve been putting in all my effort, but with a dull axe."
The old woodcutter nodded. "Hard work is important, my son, but smart work matters too. If you keep using a dull axe, no amount of strength or effort will give you good results. Sometimes, you need to step back, think, and make a change."
That day, the son sharpened his axe. The next time he went into the forest, he was amazed at how easily the trees fell. With less effort, he was able to chop more trees than ever before.
Many of us are like the young woodcutter. We work hard, put in all our energy, and keep running in circles, thinking effort alone is the key to success. But sometimes, we need to pause, reflect, and see if we're using the right approach.
If you find yourself working hard but not getting the results you expect, take a moment to think. Are you missing something important? Are there smarter ways to achieve your goal? When you find the missing piece, the solution becomes clear.
Remember, success is not just about hard work. It's about working hard and working smart.
Hard work + Smart work = Success.
